Profile
Kav has quite a history in the music business. Having DJed for over ten years, he’s been a successful club & festival promoter, frontman & guitarist in several bands and is now co-songwriter & guitarist with the Happy Mondays, who are due to release an album later this year.
Kav’s love of music started when he was six years old when he inherited an entire 60’s/ 70’s vinyl collection. By the age of 12 he had picked up his first guitar and by 13 he was in his first band.
By 17, Kav had started DJing and was promoting & touring his new club night in the North of England with his band AKAWeave. This tour included nights in Dublin, Glasgow, Manchester, Belfast, Leicester plus 3 nights at the Edinburgh Festival – picking up an award for best up & coming promoter.
Kav began to DJ regularly & soon got a residency at The Charlotte in his home-town of Leicester – an old haunt of Kasabian & members of The Holloways. By now, he was touring his nights all over the UK & Ireland, and was attracting the likes of Clint Boon (Inspirals/ XFM) and Mani (Stone Roses/Primal Scream). This is where he met the likes of Shaun Ryder, who he was later to develop a close working relationship with.
After the split of band AKAWeave in 2004, Kav moved to London & co-launched a new night at Turnmills called ‘Getloaded’. He brought along guest DJs & new bands & the night caused a huge stir in the London club-scene. Kav now DJed a monthly residency at Turnmills. Six months on, the night had grown in to a 10,000 capacity festival, confirming the Happy Mondays as a headliner, who then reformed for a ‘one-off’ gig. Shaun Ryder asked Kav to join & play guitar:
“Kav suggested the Mondays reform as well and we went for it. I asked him to play guitar, we’ve got the will now, and the talent, and it’s kind of a favour to Kav. He’s helped to get me smiling again…”
Tony Wilson (founder Factory Records/ Hacienda)- "I normally resent any Happy Mondays gig without the original guitarist, but Kav’s style complements the Mondays rather than detracts!"
The Guardian later praised Getloaded for its impact on the London scene:
The Guardian Jan 30 2005:
"This night has arguably made more impact in its first 12 months than any in living history. Not only was GetLoaded the Catalyst for the reformation of the Happy Mondays last year, it also enticed huge crowds to Clapham Common last summer for its award-winning festival!"
Since then the Mondays have played a host of live dates with some of the highlights being Summercase 2007 – Barcelona & Madrid, Fuji Rock, Roskilde, Global Gathering, Getloaded in the Park 2004 & 2005, Brixton Academy & not forgetting the sold-out homecoming Manchester MEN Arena gigs.
In 2005, Kav guested on Tall Pall’s track ‘Got It’ – released as part of the ‘Gallery Live’ sessions in May 2005.
Since then Kav has been on a continuous two year DJ tour, playing around the globe at some of the most happening nights. Namely ‘Return to New York’ with Arthur Baker, Global Gathering & Fuji Rock festivals. Kav was even lucky enough to DJ on the same tour of Australia as the Legendary James Brown, current new electro-hipsters Datarock & breaks legend Freq Nasty.
Kav DJs an eclectic mix of indie, electro & dirty soul. With a raw cutting edge set he keeps dance floors wired. He has a talent for delivering new songs, bands & white labels amongst well-known dance-floor fillers - much like the traditional dance DJ – and is a firm believer in championing new acts:
“I think playing new & not massively hyped stuff is essential to break the mold. If you set the standard, compare them with the best & they still come close then they definitely deserve to get played. Over the past year dance-floors in cities the world over have gone nuts to bands like Datarock, the View, Justice Vs Simian. This is a true test for new music”.
Kav stayed dedicated to this belief with Getloaded, when he promoted 30 unsigned bands at ‘Getloaded in the Park’ 2004. The festival won an award & has now gone on to become a 20,000 capacity sell-out festival. It is now in its fourth year. Kav parted company with Getloaded in 2006 to pursue other projects.
Having just completed a tour of Canada, Kav is due to play a DJ tour of the USA in March, including SXSW Festival Austin Texas & Miami Winter Music Conference. He has played all over Asia, Australia & Europe.
The Mondays’ new album is due out in 2007 and the band will be embarking on a tour of the summer festivals & their first gigs in the USA for years. They are currently getting geared up to do a festival tour starting with Coachella 2007 – playing along side the likes of Rage Against the Machine & Paul Van Dyk plus newer bands – The Kooks, Kaiser Chiefs, the Klaxons & Lily Allen.
Kav has also revealed a new side-project – ‘Shotgun Suzzy’ – “Sleazy Country Rock & Dirty Soul” who cite their influences as wide as ‘The Band’, ‘The Bees’, ‘The Rolling Stones’, ‘The Meat Puppets’ & ‘The Beastie Boys’. They will be playing live in London in 2007.
